New Dodge Nitro

The new Dodge Nitro is a compact SUV from the Dodge division of Chrysler. Launched in 2007 it is assembled at the Toledo North Assembly Plant in Toledo, Ohio home to the Jeep Wrangler since the 1940s. The Dodge debut came in February 2005 at the Chicago Auto Show, as a concept car featuring an aluminum themed interior design. Aluminum-trimmed vents behind the front fenders, and other aluminum trim around the door handles and rear hatch. With a raised seating position for passengers in a unique and distinctive "boxy" shape designed to set itself apart from other mid-size SUV's. The big chrome grille, flared arches, upright windscreen and flat body sides all conjure up thoughts of large American trucks. It has a distinctive and flashy appearance but whatever you think, the Nitro has an individual appearance that sets it apart from its rivals.

In 2011 the new Dodge Nitro is available in rear-wheel or four-wheel drive and the Dodge Nitro comes in three trims: Heat, Detonator, and Shock. All 3 trims feature a powerful 260-hp 4.0-liter V6 engine mated to a five-speed automatic transmission. The Heat offers standard amenities such as power mirrors, windows and door locks with remote keyless entry, satellite radio, air conditioning, cruise control and seating for five. The Detonator adds rear-park assist, remote start system, power driver's seat, overhead console, trip computer, compass and exterior temperature display. The Shock adds heated front seats, leather trim interior, and a power sunroof. Standard safety features include: front airbags, side curtain airbags, active head restraints, traction and stability control with roll-over mitigation, brake assist, and a tire-pressure monitor.

What's more, the 2.8-litre diesel engine ensures the Dodge can haul large loads. With 174bhp and 460Nm of torque, performance is predictably strong. While it's not the most refined oil-burner around, it does provide a decent amount of pace.

Mated to a five-speed automatic gearbox, the diesel unit propels the Nitro from 0-62mph in 10.5 seconds. At high cruising speeds, there's plenty of turbo noise from the engine and road noise from the suspension, but it makes merging with fast-moving traffic and overtaking a breeze.

Despite its grand debut, the Nitro sales did not do as well for the company starting 2009, although for 2010 the situation had declined. Sales are up this yaer but the decision has been taken not to continue its production into 2012 so buy one now before it's too late.
